Robert Dula House Restoration Project

The Robert Dula Restoration Project

Civil War Era House and Tobacco Barn

One of the most historically-significant properties still standing in Wentzville, the Robert Dula House and Tobacco Shed was on it's way to ruin when the WMSA took over the property and began the task of restoring it.

The Challenge

When the Wentzville Main Street Association took possession of the property 4 years ago it was in dire straights. Built sometime around 1860, the property had been vacant for many years. The once beautiful 2-story porch was falling down, the roof was in disrepair, and the foundation had already collapsed for decades before. Drug users were using the property as a place to hide while smoking or shooting up, and the grounds had grown out of control. Weeds, poison ivy, animals, broken windows, trash, cracked sidewalks, leaky ceilings, and many other factors led us to believe restoring this property would be an enormous challenge. Other groups had simply walked away from the project.

Value to the Community

Despite all of the tremendous obstacles, we clearly understood the historic value this property has for Wentzville. After years of seeing historic sites destroyed, the Wentzville Main Street Association decided the Dula property would not join the long list of areas lost to "progress," and we committed to preserving it for current and future Wentzvillians as a renovated jewel for the community.

If you have any interest in joining us in this endeavor, we welcome you aboard! We need carpenters, painters, interior designers, electricians, landscapers, restorers, project managers, fundraisers, and many more to help us continue to move this property toward full restoration. This has been an unheard of volunteer effort, with people from all walks of life pitching in to help. We'd love to add you to the list as well!
